The show was better than I thought. When I saw the initial trailer for this, I was skeptical and assumed this was a low effort cash grab. I rewatched the original release trailer since watching the show so I could parse what made me so apprehensive on watching in the first place. And, yeah, the trailer doesn't do the show justice. It makes the show look generic. What's with modern trailers and their desire to squeeze in every single quip?
The characters are fun, and since it based off the game you start to feel fear for your favorite little colored guy. Plus, the voice acting for the show was absolutely stellar. Each VA gave the each character so much personality and I couldn't help but grow extremely fond of all of them. I'd die for Cyan. Oh, and Cyan's VA was also Kimiko Glenn who also voice Horse in Centaur World, and the woman behind the version of "When He Sees Me" that goes around social media.
I watched all the episodes with my two younger sisters. We had a lot of fun pointing out the video game Easter eggs and the nod to game mechanics. The show almost makes me want to play a round of the actual game, but I feel like Among Us is best played with friends.
Playing the game isn't necessary for enjoying the show. The plot is self-sustained, straight to the point and the most fun I've had watching a murder-mystery. The show features fairly gruesome gore that made me double-check if the TV-14 rating had changed midway through. Most of the show deaths were par for the course in terms of Among Us deaths, but there were about 1 or 2 that were particularly gruesome.
And surprisingly, the show has a lot of heart. There's a lot of love in the attention to detail, and you can really tell that the team really put in the work to make this show fun.

Gee, this was sure a UFO "documentary."
I think more than UFO sightings, this DVD gave me an insight into how older TV production crews scrambled to get resources and film roll for a this feature. The b-rolls were seriously terrible. It seems like they had 1 good video of "Russian" soldiers marching in the woods and made it the entire basis of their production.
Ancient Aliens is, quite frankly a terrible show. But, watching this, in retrospect, I think most conspiracy/occult/cryptozoology "documentaries" have always been kind of slope. My expectations were quite high, since older = better, right? No. No, this is bad.
The talking heads (people who are getting interviewed) were my least favorite part. It was frankly, 2000s post-cold war, tin-hat speak.
I had more fun dissecting the b-roll footage with my sister than the actual contents of the movie. There was a lab scene were a group of "young Russian scientists" were holding the decayed heart of an alien. Well, that's what was supposed to be happening, according to the commentary dubbing over the film. However, using my eyes, all I saw was a bunch of actors shuffling around in white trench coats waving their hands a bunch. It WOULD have been the coolest scene in the world if there actually was a group of scientist uncovering the foreign anatomy of an interterrestial being, but no. We did not get that.
Honestly, the entire documentary was so disappointing. Well, except for the opening, which was very fun! I've watched most of the DVDs at home and a lot of them were somewhat modern and made after 2010. This, being a product from 2004, had a little whimsy to it. The opening scene selection starts with an alien handing slamming down a gun onto a confidential file case.
The scene is very simple but really hyped me up at the start. There was a charm to what a saw, an artist out there put their heart into making this opening. Makes me somewhat reminiscent of the old Fallout CG renders. Back in around 2017, 2018? we made a functioning DVD menu in flash for our interactive media class. I want to be the guy making Alien's slamming down tables for DVD menus.
I didn't finish the film. Two-thirds through the 1st disc (this is a 2-disc set) I started conversing with my older brother and younger sister instead. I got really into the conversation. Frankly, no one else was trying to watch either so I shut down the player and chatted through the night instead. I think we were on day 20ish of having no internet at home (Post-Typhoon Bavi), but honestly I'd rather just talk to someone instead of watching this.
I'm also a little fatigued by these documentaries. They're laced with uncredible sources, biased opinions and blantant rascism. They leave a sour, bitter taste and I'm no longer willing to sit by and be entertained by nonsense.
A part of me mourns this. I wish these documentaries leaned more on exploring life outside the solar system and idk, made fun 'world-building' theories on the probability of alien life occurring in our universe and the sources that could support that. Instead, these documentaries are built on strange ideals and concepts, political leanings and 'secret societies.' There's a case to be made on how crytozoology/occult/conspiracies can lead to radicalization (flat earth).
